Race report: INDOSPEED RACE SERIES 2011
Round 1

TAMITON-RW Road Race Team took part in Asia Road Racing Championship last year for the first time. In 2011, we are one of the entrants in the J-GP2 class of MFJ Japan Road Race Championship. In overseas we will concentrate on races in Indonesia, such as Indospeed Race Series and Asia Road Racing Championship.
Although our factory had been damaged by the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, we managed to participate in the opening race of Indospeed Race Series（Sentul International Circuit） on 10 April, thanks to numbers of people who gave us a helping hand. From now on, we will do the best we can to meet your expectation, so please keep supporting us through the season.

Fact file: Shu Sato, the team rider

Naoki Shimizu was our team rider for Asia Road Racing Championship in the last season. This year Shu Sato, a promising young talent will be riding all races in J-GP2 and Indospeed Race Series besides a one-off entry in the Asia Road Racing Championship.

Beginning of the race weekend

We had to head off to Indonesia without enough tests and preparations owing to the earthquake disaster and, to make matters worse, the race dates got brought a week forward at the last minute. Our machines and equipments arrived at Sentul International Circuit on Friday of the race weekend. Under the circumstances, however, we managed to change the machine specs, to carry out the test run during the 30-minute practice and to pass the machine inspection. We would like to thank all, especially the staff from Kawasaki Motor Indonesia (KMI) and BEET Japan Industry (an entrant of Asia Road Racing Championship) for the assistance and information they provided.

It was 9 am when our motorcycles arrived at the circuit. There was only 3 hours to unpack and to rebuild the machines, accordingly to the unexpected alteration in vehicle regulations. We were informed that teams were allowed a test run before the machine inspection, so we gave machine rebuilding precedence over all other processes.
Although we had focused on learning the course and its layout, a characteristic of the course made the test considerably difficult. It was the changing surface condition – non-asphalt, covered with patches of concrete. We had to anticipate a tough race.
Our rider Sato seemed to have struggled to find the racing line. Nevertheless, we could gain a lot through this unexpected test run session, and there was no problems found on our machines. We felt relieved for a while.

Practice session

The practice session started in wet condition after a tropical squall from the night before. We brought only a limited number of tyres with us, and moreover, we could not purchase any rain tyres. So our team tried our best without a rehearsal, running the qualifier with used tyres for the best possible lap time. Having suffered an uneasy ride from unfamiliar course condition, Sato managed to get the 8th position on the grid.
“It is very important to find out how to deal with the concrete patches. Never seen a course like this in Japan. But I can use a new set of tyres tomorrow, so I want to overtake others by performing a rocket start with confidence. The race condition is not ideal but I’m aiming at the podium finish.” Sato said determinedly.

The race

Sato had a good build up towards the race after beating his own lap record by two seconds in the morning practice session. As he promised, he made a brilliant start. Despite dropping into 4th on the second lap from the 3rd on the opening lap, the race unfolded as he closely chased #162 M. Fadli of Kawasaki Factory Team. However, Sato regrettably run off the course on the 5th lap. Luckily he didn’t fall off his bike but lost positions. From here he put up a good fight, breaking his own bests in the lap time. Being helped by the fall-offs of other riders, he managed to finish 6th winning 10 series points, which was we would say pretty good in a series opener.

Comments by Shu Sato

I am grateful for having been able to race in Indonesia in spite of difficulties and problems we had. I was very much worried whether I could go and take part in the race as planned. However, my team, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Motor Indonesia and many other people gave me great support. My race result was not very much satisfactory, but I have learnt a lot through the race experience, and I think I have earned valuable 10 points which leads me to the next race. I couldn’t win the race but I would like to bring better news next time, so I’ve got to work hard on planning, analysing and testing from now on. I hope I can do well in racing to cheer up and inspire the people in Japan with courage, whose lives have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Interview: Shu Sato

Q: What are your thoughts on the participation in the Indospeed? And what is your aspiration from now on?
Sato: I believe I have made the earliest start of the season among the riders from All Japan Road Race Championship. It was good to be able to provide positive news when whole Japan was depressed over the earthquake and tsunami disaster.
Q: The race in Sentul. Please talk us through.
Sato: I realised that my racing skills were not yet up to the required level in some part of the race. But I couldn’t perform 100% in Indonesia, and I have only started my racing career now. Also we know that there is plenty of room for improvement on the machine. To tell you the truth, I could not think of the machine until after the race, because I had been too much in fear of the course condition (laughs).
I was able to communicate with the local because I had visited Sentul as a member of staff last year. The racing environment and condition are not too bad actually, so for the next time I would like to study and analyse the course in advance to produce a good result. I believe I’ve got a chance of winning. It’s just a matter of becoming more experienced in riding on the concrete surface.

TAMITON-Rwロードレースチームは、2010年にアジア選手権に初参戦しました今季2011年は、全日本ロードレース選手権(MFJ JAPAN ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP)のJ-GP2クラスに参戦、海外ではインドネシアにターゲットを絞り、インドネシア選手権、アジア選手権に参戦します。
3月の東日本大震災では、我々のファクトリーも被害を受けましたが、多くの方々の支援により、2011年4月10日インドネシア選手権第1戦（センチュールサーキット）の開幕戦に参戦する事が出来ました。今後、皆様の期待に応えることができるよう努力しますので、今後とも変わらぬ応援をいただけますようお願いします。

昨年のアジア選手権は、清水直樹をライダーとして参戦しましたが、今年は、若手有望株の「佐藤周(さとうしゅう)」に変更となりました。J-GP2および、インドネシア選手権にフル参戦、アジア選手権にはスポット参戦となります。

レースウイーク

震災の影響と、レースの開催日程が直前になって1週間前倒しになったことが重なり、で十分なテスト、準備を行うことができずにインドネシア入り。マシンや機材の到着はレース当日の金曜日。かなり厳しい条件だったが、現地カワサキモータースインドネシア（KMI）や今期アジア選手権参戦の日本BEET工業スタッフの協力、情報提供もあり、車両の仕様変更、30分間のテスト走行、そして無事に車両検査にも合格することができた。ご協力をいただいた皆様に感謝します。
レース車両がサーキットに到着したのが午前9時。開梱に始まり、急遽の車両規則変更により慌ただしく車両を作り直すこと約3時間。車両検査前に走行が可能と云う情報を得て、走行を最優先とする作業を実施。サーキットレイアウト等のコース習熟に専念するが、コースの特性上、路面状態がころころ変わり（アスファルトではなくコンクリートパッチが多い）思うような走行も出来ず苦戦の予感。走行が終わりライダーも走行ラインに関しては苦戦している様子だが、収穫も多々あり予想外のテスト走行が出来、車両にもほぼ問題が無く、まずは一安心といったところ。

プラクティスセッション
前夜からのスコールにより朝のフリー走行はウェットコンディション。しかしタイヤの持込本数が少なくレインタイヤを購入することもできないため、予選にはぶっつけ本番で臨む。予選は中古タイヤでのタイムアタックになった。慣れないコースコンディションに苦戦するがなんとか8番手をキープした。佐藤周は「コンクリートパッチの攻略がポイントになりそうです。日本では絶対にありえないコースですね。でも明日は新品のタイヤも履けるし、得意のスタートで一気に前に出たいと思います。条件は良くありませんがポディウムを狙います」と決勝への意味ごみを語った。

ファイナル
朝のフリー走行では、自己ベストを2秒更新。好調のままスタートを迎えた。公言どおり得意のスタートを決めオープニングラップ3位、2周目に4位に落ちるが、カワサキファクトリーチームの#162M.Fadliにぴったりとつける展開。しかし5周目に痛恨のコースアウト。転倒は免れたものの、大きく順位を落とした。しかしここから健闘して、自己ベストタイムを次々と更新。他車の転倒も有り結果6位でチェッカー。シリーズポイント１０を獲得して開幕戦はまずまずの結果となった。

今回、多々の障害や問題が有ったにもかかわらずここインドネシアの地で、レースが出来た事に感謝しています。途中本当に計画通り参戦出来るか不安も有りましたがチームを始め、カワサキ重工、カワサキモータースインドネシア、他多数の応援でここに結果を残す事が出来ました。決して満足できるリザルトでは無いですが、今回の経験や参戦出来た事は非常に大きな事ですし、次戦に繋げる価値ある１０ポイントだったと感じています。今回勝つ事は叶わなかったのですが 対策、TESTを重ね次戦には必ずやイイ報告が出来るようチャレンジしていきます。震災で被害に遭っている日本の人々に勇気を与える活躍をしたいと思います!

震災を受けた方にも元気を与えられるといいですね。

ライダーへの質問／佐藤周
Q：今回の参戦についてどう感じたか。今後の抱負は？
A：多分全日本勢の中では一番先に今シーズンのレースをスタートできた。震災で日本がすごく落ち込んでいる時に少しでも明るい話題を作れた事はすごくいい事だと思います。

Q：今回のレースについて
A： やはり自分のライダースキルの低さを感じた場所も有りました。だけれどもまだ自分を出せていない、まだまだこれから。マシンも改良の余地があるし、実際レースが終わって初めてマシンについて考える事が出来た。それまではコースが怖くて（笑）でも去年このコースにスタッフとしてきていたから、現地の方ともスムーズコミニケーション取れましたし、レース環境はそれほど悪くない。頭を使って、勢いだけじゃなくちゃんと結果を残したいです。勝算もあるし、あとはいかにコンクリート部分に慣れるか。
